Last night I caught the CNN special, Black in America. I of course was very pleased to see this because CNN is obviously the best place to go when discussing Black people. The bumpers for the show(the intro’s and outro’s for each segment coming back from commercial) was of a Def Poetry Jam style Poet rhyming each segment together. This annoyed the holy heck out of me. Why couldn’t we just have a regular black guy saying. “Hey, This is the next part of our story.” Noooo, we have to have a brotha over pronouncing words and rhyming.

Note: When discussing the ills of Black people to White people. Please don’t rhyme.

I’m assuming that the Def Poet guy was there to draw black people in. Like “Hey guys, this coooooould be episode of the new Street Poetry Movement, don’t you guys want to watch?”

Listen, I’m not going to lie. Discussing this is a very difficult thing to do.  It’s a sensitive spot and when something is being put on CNN (it would be different on BET, because…well…White people aren’t really all that hot on BET. CNN, theres a good chance that mostly White people are watching it) and I personally think it puts us up for more scrutiny.  We don’t need anymore scrutiny. Plus now a new crop of white people now think they have a great amount of knowledge of black people and can have discussions with me about it. Probably drunkenly. Please, please don’t ask me about education in the black community. Yes, I have an opinion. No, don’t want to share it with you after 5 shots for 10 bucks at The Continental.

True Story: During the course of the special they said a statistic that 1 out of 4 black children are born out of wedlock. My g/f (white girl) immediately started talking about how sad that is. I immediately laughed at her and said that THAT statistic is obviously wrong because if it were 1 out  of 4 that would be AMAZING. 3 out of 4 black kids would have dads?  That would have changed my entire upbringing. Nobody had dads.  I then checked the statistic and re-watched the show and found out it was 70 percent of black children are born out of wedlock. That made sense to me.

Tonight on CNN’s Black in America they’re focusing on The Black Man. I’m fairly sure I’m gonna stare at the television and scream obscenities.
