If you haven’t heard the uproar about This dumbass blog entry, read it here.
The thing is that me ripping Adrienne Curry a new one isn’t going to do much. Yes. She’s an idiot. This isn’t something that I have to stop and explain to everyone. You’ve seen her on TV time and time again showing that had God (or the universe or whatever you believe) not given her a decent body and face she would probably be in some trailer park with a meth problem.
What I do feel that I have to address, was the rather large amount of people who seemed to agree with her ideas that Black History Month and BET are racist.
I’d argue that BET could be considered racist under certain circumstances, but not toward white people, toward black people themselves. Sometimes I see more negative stereotypes on there than I do anywhere else. But the idea that having an outlet for black arts and a time to celebrate black accomplishments is racist is a scary thought that seems to be going through a lot of people’s heads.
Adrienne actually threw out the ‘Get over it’ line about slavery.
I’m not sure how many people outside of the black race believe this particular line of thought, but I have to break something to you. It wasn’t that long ago. It wasn’t that long ago that people in what is now one of the most powerful countries in the world were property. It wasn’t that long ago that my great grandmother was a slave. That’s a little too close for comfort. And after slavery ended, don’t think that the good times started rolling for Black America. The fact is, my mom, who isn’t old at all was called a nigger when she went to school. They crowded around (as cops had to escort her in) and called her a NIGGER.
Have you watched any music specials lately? Ray Charles, The Temptations, and a lot more have that part of the special where they have to explain that “because they were BLACK” various things couldn’t happen to them or for them. It hasn’t been fifty years since Martin Luther King was assassinated. But black people really just need to get over things right?
I’m not all militant folks. I’m working corporate currently and come home to my white girlfriend (hi honey) every day. I’m not speaking as one who refuses to mingle. I speak as one who’s eyes aren’t closed. I see bullshit daily. I’m a large black guy, so I have my fair share of pocketbooks clutched and people not wanting me to walk behind them on the street. My girlfriend’s parents have barely acknowledged our relationship(Me Blacky and She’s Jewy) and it’s fucking 2007.
We’d love to “Get over it”. So when you have a reasonable way to do that, please let me know. I’ll bring it back to the Black Folk meeting and it’ll be on top of our ‘New Business’.
