I’ve been bitchen all day about the whole comedy vs. producing thing.

One of the bartenders at my local hang out told me that I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I immediately asked him what…the FUCK…was he talking about. He says that if i can make money with out having to put myself out there, then why wouldn’t I do it. If theres money to be made on this side of the field then I should take it and run and try to make more. He then started to talk about Puff Daddy aka P.Diddy aka Sean John aka the annoying guy who says ‘uh huh uh huh’ in all his songs. He says that puffy isn’t great at the whole rapping thing but he can make things happen because he knows how to run a business.

This struck me as interesting.

Why am I bitching? I could run things from behind the scenes and not frustrate myself with the whole ‘material’ thing. I’ve done comedy so I have a bit of an understanding about how things work and how to treat people. I could do this well. Make power moves and make a name in producing comedy.

Or…

I could just relax. Do my show. Make it the best show that it can be. Write material and get my ass out to open mics and focus on the goal. Being a comedian. Which in the end, as cheesy as it sounds, is all I really want.

It was interesting how, today, I was at the other local bar (we have 2, and both of which I am on a first name basis with the owners and all the bartending staff. No, I’m NOT an alcoholic. No, I don’t need to admit it. No, I do know the first step.) and one of the patrons and the boyfriend of the bar manager wants to try out comedy. They’ve been coming to me to talk about it and work out some stuff. I was wondering “Did they not SEE the last three shows? I’m obviously not that funny.” But they speak to me as if I’m some authority. And its interesting that I’m very aware of there long set ups, and lack of pay offs, and the forced call backs. I actually have gained a little bit of knowledge about this whole thing. Its interesting. I will not fall back and produce. I will not play the puppeteer. I will be what I want.

I will be…no…I am a STAND-UP COMIC.
